How 2 Carve and Shave
A Foam Pumpkin

"Here's a Step by Step on the Entire Process"

Step #2 How to Glue or Transfer a Pattern

You have 2 choices to get the pattern on the pumpkin
I will show you here how to glue the pattern on, For Foam pumpkins this seems to work Best

If you prefer, you can use transfer paper instead, Follow the directions on the Real Pumpkin Carving Tutor using Transfer Paper.
Found Here

We Have our two patterns ready

You will need to buy Some White School Glue
I use Elmers Brand

Some Carvers Use Glue Sticks instead
For me this White glue works really well
and is easy to remove

Cover your work table with newspaper
Take the Pattern that you Trimmed Down
And Cover the Back with the White Glue

Place the Glued Pattern on the Flat side of the pumpkin
Work the pattern with your fingers into all the creases on the pumpkin
try to keep wrinkles to a minimum
You will have wrinkles try to have them fall outside the pattern area
Wipe up Dripping glue with a finger
And go around the edges of the pattern with the glue on your finger .

Turn the pumpkin right side up
And Leave it be for about 10 to 15 minutes
Go Back and Use some paper towles to remove rest of glue Drips

Here's the FUN Part !

Go to Bed and Let the Glue Dry OverNight

This is importaint, if the glue is wet, you will have one heck of a time carving it.
your dremel bits will keep getting caked up with wet glue.

Most Carvers will glue many patterns to pumpkins in one night!

Once the patterns are Glued & Dryed on the pumpkin, you can carve it days, weeks or months from now.

THE NEXT DAY

Your Pumpkin is now ready to be Carved.
Woo Hoo !!!

Here's Where we Left off

The First thing were going to do
Is Outline all the shapes on the pattern
With a #7134 5/64" Diamond Wheel Point Bit

Be Very Careful not to Cut through the Kin
We Only want to scape off the Orange Skin

Right through the Pattern and Skin !

Just a Close-Up of Outlining

Finished Outlining

NOTE: Some of the Pattern May Tear a little
This is Fine as long as the shape was outlined correctly.

Now Change the Dremel Bit to a Cutting Drill Bit
Were going to use a 3/64 Drill Bit

Cut out All the Black Shapes in the Pattern
Take your Time
Your only Cutting Foam

This Will Cut like a Hot Knife through Butter
Again - TAKE YOUR TIME!

Now It's Time to SHAVE the Pumpkin

Another Bit Change
Change your Dremel Bit to a
#107 Engraving Cutter

Start Scraping out All the GRAY Areas on the Pattern
Down to the Light Yellow Foam.

You'll now see how useful the outling step was, the outlines help you stay within the lines

Were Finished Shaving the gray areas

Don't worry about the shaded areas not being smooth
We'll Fix that a Little Later

I changed the top of the pattern a little, I don't like straight Lines

Next were Going to Remove the pattern
And Clean the Pumpkin

Fill a Sink with about 6 inches of Warm water and add a a few ounces of White Vinegar

The Vinegar is an old trick used to remove wallpaper
It desolves the glue more rapidly

Place the pumpkin
Pattern/Carving Side Down
into the water
Let Stand for about 15 minutes

....15 Minutes Later
Spin the pumpkin so the Solid (uncarved side) is now facing the water
Take the pumpkin out of the water, Empty the water from the pumpkin
Rolling off the (uncarved side)

we do this because Water is Heavy and can Damage the carving!

Now Start to peal the pattern off the pumpkin, Get it started with using your fingernails.
The Pattern will slide right Off.

Once the Pattern is Off

Dunk the Pumpkin Again in the water
This Time Just for a few Seconds

Grab a Sponge and Go over the Carving Lightly to remove Any remaining glue

Wet Mr. Clean Magic Eraser's
Work really Well!

Now Just Dry as Before
with Paper Towels

The Next (And LAST) Page will Show You How to
