This is what I've done so far. There is a bit of a Chicago sports theme to this. All were carved on Michael's pumpkins except the last one. This is lit with a 25 watt bulb just to show the variations in thickness better. The darkest areas on mine were at least an inch thick. The thinnest areas were right about 1/2" thick. Everything else was somewhere in between. There was no real consistency.

I tried one of those as well just for giggles and the biggest problem that I had was the thickness. Mine varied from about 1/2" thick in some spots to over 1" in others. It just meant going over the cutout areas several times until I finally got through and the shading was deeper in some areas than ...

This actually carved quite nicely. I would suggest probably using an x-acto to outline because my edges were somewhat rough without doing that.

I would absolutely be interested in something like that. One question, would the hole for the light be left for the carver to cut out as location would be somewhat pattern dependent?
